If you are among the crowd that is convinced that the state and federal laws requiring the use of helmets are created just to cramp your style then you may have come up with or heard the following arguments against these laws or policies. If you are among the crowd that is in support of these laws because they protect your loved ones and the possibility of you inadvertently causing an accident that leads to the death or severe injury of someone riding a motorcycle then you may want to read the following arguments to see where these people are coming from. If you aren’t interested in motorcycle helmet use at all then you may not want to read on and just stop right here!
Some argue that wearing a helmet increases the risk for serious neck injuries and those people are right, but how is it that these same people don’t see the potential of it saving your life? The answer is as obvious to you as it is to me, they want to find any reason to not have to wear a helmet. If a helmet hurts your neck it is probably because you got in a wreck, meaning that same helmet that hurt your neck probably saved your life.
Others will argue that wearing a motorcycle helmet will cause reduced vision for the driver and therefore increase the potential for a wreck. These people are again correct on the surface as they probably don’t have the same vision with a helmet as they do without it. However, driving a large vehicle or driving in a rainstorm will reduce your field of vision, but not have the same ability to increase your chance of surviving an accident. Again, the risk is not as large as the reward.
Finally, some will argue that helmet use should only be enforced for the younger drivers who are still learning how to ride a bike in the first place. While this may have merit at heart, the laws are nearly impossible to enforce as they would be if speeding was only enforced on drivers that are under the age of 35. How would police be able to enforce these laws or have the manpower to enforce them?
