Motorcycle History: Wearing a Helmet

Obviously you are of the demographic that likes to toss the proverbial caution into the proverbial wind and be as strong as any man or woman can possibly be. You once walked to school through 10 miles of fog and thick snow with two broken legs while carrying piles of fire wood to take to a sickly old lady. You were the toughest kid in your elementary, middle school, high school, and college classes in addition to being the toughest guy in the office (you whipped ‘em all!). However, did you know that you are still required to wear a helmet when you are riding your motorcycle? People have had to do this for a while, here is just how long they’ve had to do so.

Your state was required by federal law to step up and enact a motorcycle helmet law around 1967 when the feds made it nearly impossible to get funding for highways and such unless laws were passed. You see, it had nothing to do with how strong you believe you are or will be, it has to do with the government trying to save your life or at least the quality of it by taking from your state’s pocketbook. I agree, sometimes the fed is ridiculous, but this time doesn’t seem to be one of those.

If you are of the same type of person who believes you could survive a car crash without wearing your seat belt then you can curse the same politician who made you wear a helmet. The same laws that started enforcing the use of safety belts in the 1980s and 1990s started enforcing the use of helmets at the same time. You have every right to live however you want, but when it comes to wearing a helmet or a safety belt (in addition to not being so bright) you are breaking the law and could face some pretty stiff fines.

While some states have repealed helmet laws for some riders based on age, most states do require everyone to wear a helmet, so be smart and wear one. I promise I won’t tell anybody that it is you.
